Great Keyboard for HTPC Use : Keysonic ACK-540RF+ Compact Wireless Keyboard with Integrated Touch Pad Mouse (2.4Ghz Radio Frequency, Notebook Layout) ideal for HTPC, Pc & Mac Computers
Short version review in paragraph one and two.
I love it. Because...
It works at long range perfectly.
It pairs with finger touch without leaving the couch.
It appears solidly built.
It looks professional and kind of cool.
Possible Improvements?
No media center controls.
Mis-labeled left Windows key.
Incidental left palm brushes on smart pad.
Now the long version...
I am starting to type this review 35 feet from my computer, through a bedroom wall. WOW! Walked out, and here are the words I typed!!! 5 stars for that attribute!! I've bought other KB/mouse combos claiming long range, and the best one needs new batteries to reliably reach 12' for a week or two. And that's if no kid's shoulder/foot/chair/book, etc... gets in the line of site. This little jewel is pumping perfection with only 2 cheap-o AAA's that came with it in the box.
Setup? Windows Vista. Plugged in the USB receiver and the included short extension cable, put batteries in. Turned switch "on" underneath keyboard, and voila! Tossed my crappy old "long range" keyboard that held me hostage for months. What an abusive relationship THAT had been!
I didn't have to pair the KB to the computer. It did it itself. BUT, if I DID have to pair it, there is a button under the KB you can simply finger press (no tool!) that will do the job w/o leaving the couch! This alone is genius, compared to having to find a pen/fork/pin laying around, carrying the KB to the computer and pressing a button on the receiver, etc...and then within seconds cramming a fork prong into the tiny KB button. Nope. Out of the stone age and into sweet comfort with this bad boy. One finger touch button to pair it. While still on the couch...ahhhhh.
It has a decent weight, making me optimistic on build quality. They didn't try to cheat on materials, apparently. It looks cool and professional...so far. I wouldn't call it sexy, but looking around, it would get far more electronics date offers than my old setup could have hoped to. I hope it doesn't wear visibly on the palm rest areas like the Adesso.
Touch and layout? Typing feels a bit cheap to me as a first impression. They say silent, but it surely isn't. But it isn't super loud either. Decent feedback on keys. You know when you've hit one, but its still easy. I found the Windows logo key to the left of spacebar is actually an ALT key. I'll simply remember that and deal with it, since the Windows key on the right side reliably performs that function.
One reviewer mentioned it lacks a right-side scroll on the touchpad. I'm glad. Instead, you put two fingers anywhere on the pad and it knows you want to scroll. Here, I can be lazy and scroll from anywhere on the smart pad.
OK. Here comes the negative...so far. Keep in mind I only set it up hours ago. When typing, I find the curser jumps and I'll be typing in a paragraph above suddenly. The fault? The smartpad is sensitive and my palm must brush it periodically, sending the curser to a new location. This is frustrating so far, but already in typing this note, I have adjusted my hands and this randomness is greatly improving. And I'm larger than most, at around 220 with a wide frame...and I've lifted weights so my arms may come in at an awkward angle compared to others. Even with this problem, I'm super happy. For all I know I can switch off the smart pad temporarily...and if not, my typing adjustments will triumph.
I'd have to be too picky to complain further. I docked one star due to the mis-label of the left windows key, and my random inadvertent brushing of the smartpad. If they moved the smartpad 1/3" to the right, it probably would be solved. It is not centered between the hands when in the proper typing position.
Also, I don't see any Media Center keys for shortcuts or movie/tv/audio controls. So what? At least I have a KB that actually works at a distance. My computer came with a Media Center remote anyway. For this review, I'll subscribe to the "Do one thing...and do it well" mindset.
