Surprisingly fun mouse! : Zowie Gear White EC1 Optical Gaming Mouse Retail
I guess I'd be considered a hardcore pc gamer. It's probably my favorite thing to do in my free time. I'm also a fan of computer mice, I've tried a ton of them and recognize differences in their affect on gameplay. Lots of new mice today use the same sensors, so I like to try to find ones that use different models, and this one finally didn't use a phillips twin-eye, or avago s9500, so I thought I'd give it a try.
My first impression is of course the appearance of this mouse. I got the white because most of the mice out there are black and I wanted a change in mood. It's very sleek, mine has a little bit of a scuff on it that will probably be rubbed out from use. I've heard other people also get scuffed finishes with this model. The contours are sexy, and the wheel lights up blue on the highest CPI, and red on the lowest while mixing the two inbetween. I own a razer ironclad aluminum mouse plate and this mouse contrasts nicely with it, like a white cloud caught in an overcast. The plastic is subtley transparent, so the wheel light bleeds through in certain spots, at first I thought it was cheap looking, but them I noticed how the light distributed on the mouse in the dark, and it actually looks really cool.
The grip is fantastic. I'm a native palm gripper and this mouse fits great. The shape is similar to the IME3.0, but I actually like this better because the body has a bit better feel with slightly smoother contours. It's a light to medium weighted mouse, no adjustability in weight here, but I find the weight to be exceptional. It's effortless to recenter at low sensitivity. The finish is very pleseant. I've had so many rubberized mice, and while the rubberized coating is cool and all, it's not really that necessary and tends to wear off anyway. This mouse has a similar finish the the top shell of the Logitech MX518.
The sensor is great. It seems like a gamble with gaming mice as most of them are cheaply assembled and each one has its own characteristics. This unit appears to be flawless. No tracking loss on the aluminum mat with fast swipes. The lift off is as advertised, very low. I can flick this mouse and at the end of the flick the aim stays right where I left it. You get 3 different CPI selections that can be selected with a button underneath the mouse. This allows you to switch between 500, 1000, and 2000 CPI/DPI. The lower end mimics the IME3.0 while the higher end is a very respectable precision setting that is likely as high as anybody really needs. Rediculous 6400 dpi laser mice are pretty gimmicky and dont really provide much benefit unless youre using 9 HD monitors in your face.
The construction of the mouse is pretty solid. The shell is a three piece construction, a top plate, the main body, and the base. For me, theres a little bit of movement concerning the left rear corner of the top plate which clicks in a little. Aesthetically it doesnt look wrong, and it's not a piece I clamp and constantly press during use so it's a non-issue. Some mice like the cheaply made Razer Mamba can be squeezed between the thumb and the ring finger and you can feel the plastic give in, but the Zowie EC doesn't so the plastic is sturdy.
The mouse feet are big, but I don't sense a great differene in motion because of their size compared to other mice. They will likely wear down like all my other mice as they're your standard teflons. Right now, judging by the initial wear, the whole surface of the feet are not yet in full contact with the mat. So as the feet wear down and even out the performance will probably change as they start to increase their contact area.
The buttons are great, they're a little bit stiffer than the IME3.0 which tends to have accidental clicks when resetting the mouse during quick recenters. This mouse can endure a little more force when putting it down on the mat. The side buttons activate pretty deep into the mouse, I probably would prefer a bit more of a shallow travel in those, but it's acceptable as it is. The wheel is very nice though. The distance between detents is a little longer than mose mice and reduces accidental scroll over. The clicks are soft but evident and very even which is more than can be said for razer mice. The mouse wheel click is also nice, not too far, and will likely break in nicely over time.
Pros:
- Attractive appearance
- Great tracking
- Solid materials
- Solid construction
- Great scroll wheel
- Great grip
- Nice button clicks
- Plug and play, no drivers or interface required (very nice for travel)
- 3 simple CPI selections with ideal variety
Cons:
- Deep travel on explorer buttons (harder to do rapid clicks)
- Might have a scuffed finish out of the box
Conclusion :If you like the way this mouse looks, and youre somewhat interested and looking for a gaming mouse, I say go for it.
